Jane Duncan is a Professor in the Department of Journalism, Film and Television at the University of Johannesburg. Before that she held a Chair in Media and the Information Society at Rhodes University and was the Executive Director of the Freedom of Expression Institute. She has also worked in the community arts sector, including at the Afrika Cultural Centre and the Funda Centre. She has three postgraduate degrees, and has written widely on freedom of expression, the right to privacy, social movements and the right to protest, and media policy. She is author of a book called ‘The rise of the securocrats’, to be published by Jacana Media in October 2014.
